Leadership often feels like chaos. Competing priorities, constant change, and the pressure to perform can make it easy to lose sight of what really holds teams together. But when we step back, patterns emerge. Like the night sky, leadership forms constellations — distinct but connected lights working in harmony.
In The Leadership Cosmos, I describe three core leadership energies:
Suns, the visionaries who imagine and inspire.
Moons, the nurturers who stabilise and reflect.
Stars, the operators who structure and sustain.
Each energy has power on its own, but it is only when they orbit one another that leadership becomes sustainable.
Apple: The Power of a Complete Orbit
At Apple, Steve Jobs embodied the Sun. His vision and intensity drove the company forward. But it was Tim Cook, the Star, who created the systems and precision needed to turn innovation into reality. And Jony Ive, the Moon, transformed vision into human-centred design that connected emotionally with millions.
Each one complemented the others. Jobs lit the path, Ive reflected it beautifully, and Cook built the roads to travel it.
South Africa’s Freedom Movement: Balance Under Pressure
During South Africa’s struggle for freedom, Nelson Mandela was the Sun, inspiring courage and unity. Oliver Tambo, the Star, built the political structure and kept the movement organised during exile. Walter Sisulu, the Moon, nurtured relationships and grounded the vision in humanity. Together, their balance of purpose, process, and compassion made the impossible achievable.
The Lesson of the Orbit
Leadership collapses when one energy dominates.
Too much Sun can burn teams out.
Too much Star energy can lead to rigidity.
Too much Moon energy can slow progress.
Healthy organisations maintain orbit. They recognise that leadership is not a solo act but a collective rhythm.
A Moment for Reflection
Ask yourself: which light do you lead with?
Who complements your orbit?
And are you building a sky where everyone’s light has space to shine?
True leadership is not chaos. It is a constellation.
